The predecessor of the Faculty of Education at Henan University was the Department of Education at Zhongzhou University, which was founded in 1923. It was one of the earliest departments established at Henan University. In 1924, it began enrolling undergraduate students, and in 1927, it started admitting graduate students, pioneering graduate education at Henan University and even in Henan Province. In 1954, with the advancement of the national policy on departmental adjustments, the Department of Education was transformed into the Public Education Teaching and Research Office, offering compulsory courses in education and psychology for all normal students at the university. In 1980, the Department of Education was reinstated, resuming undergraduate and graduate admissions.

In July 1999, the School of Educational Science was established based on the former Department of Education. In May 2008, to commemorate the generous support of the renowned patriotic industrialist Mr. Tin Ka-Ping from Hong Kong towards the development of the school, it was renamed the School of Educational Science (Tin Ka-Ping College of Education), with Mr. Tin Ka-Ping honored as the honorary dean and honorary professor of the college. In May 2021, the Faculty of Education was established based on the School of Educational Science.

The faculty has the authority to grant doctoral degrees in both Education and Psychology as first-level disciplines. In 2024, a new doctoral degree authorization point in Education was added. Currently, the faculty enrolls doctoral students in nine specializations: Principles of Education, Curriculum and Teaching Theory, History of Education, Higher Education, Educational Technology, Moral Education, Basic Psychology, Developmental and Educational Psychology, and Applied Psychology, with 67 doctoral students currently enrolled. The faculty has postdoctoral research stations in Education and Psychology, with 93 postdoctoral researchers in residence.

The faculty has first-level discipline master’s degree authorization in both Education and Psychology, enrolling academic master’s students in 15 specializations: Principles of Education, Curriculum and Teaching Theory, History of Education, Comparative Education, Preschool Education, Higher Education, Adult Education, Vocational and Technical Education, Educational Technology, Teacher Education, Youth and Children’s Organization and Ideological Education, Basic Psychology, Developmental and Educational Psychology, Applied Psychology, and Cognitive Psychology. It also has second-level discipline master’s degree authorization in Educational Economics and Management, enrolling academic master’s students. The faculty has professional master’s degree authorization in Education and Applied Psychology, offering professional master’s programs in Educational Management, Modern Educational Technology, Primary Education, Preschool Education, and Psychological Health Education, with more than 800 full-time master’s students currently enrolled. The faculty currently offers undergraduate programs in Education, Educational Technology, Preschool Education, Applied Psychology (Psychological Counseling), and Applied Psychology (Human Resource Development), with 716 undergraduate students currently enrolled.

The faculty has a strong faculty team. There are currently 150 faculty members, including 37 professors and 41 associate professors. Among them, 47 are doctoral supervisors, and more than 130 are master’s supervisors.

The faculty currently consists of four academic and administrative units: the College of Education, the College of Psychology, the College of Teacher Education, and the Institute of Basic Education. It also has the Ministry of Education’s Co-Built Education Evaluation Reform Research Base and 13 provincial-level research institutions, including the Henan University Center for Educational Reform and Development, the Henan Provincial Center for Educational Informatization Development Research, the Henan Provincial Institute of Educational Policy Research, and the Henan Provincial Center for Teacher Education Development. Additionally, the faculty has five university-level research institutions: the Institute of Psychology and Behavior, the Center for Life and Moral Education Research, the Institute for the History and Comparative Study of Education, the Center for Vocational and Adult Education Research, and the Institute of Cognition, Brain, and Health. It also operates key laboratories, including the Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Psychology and Behavior, the Henan Provincial Key Discipline Open Laboratory of Cognition and Behavior, the Psychology Laboratory, the Modern Educational Technology Laboratory, and the Human Resource Management Laboratory. The editorial office of Psychological Research, the Henan Provincial Education Cadre Training Center, the Henan Provincial Psychological Association, the Henan Educational Research Society, and the Henan Education Society’s Educational Technology Committee are also affiliated with the faculty.
